    General Information:

The Nucleus is a double-sided formicarium from Tar Heel Ants.  The Nucleus formicaria have a number of features that make them different than other formicaria products.  Features such as a two-sided nest, removable glass panels on both sides, substrate-coated chambers, nestmates watering system and water towers, magnetically detachable foraging area, and professionally carved Ytong nest make the Nucleus unique.  This nest is recommended for all species and sizes of ants.  If you feel you have ants that need specialized habitats please contact us for a discussion on modifications at tarheelants@gmail.com.

The Nucleus II formicarium is made of our Type III material.   The large water towers included in the Type III Nucleus require refilling on average every 3-4 weeks with fluctuations coming based on humidity conditions where the habitat is kept.

***Pdf file is available for this formicarium, please email us at tarheelants@gmail.com for an emailed copy***

***We recommend species such as Messor spp., Pogonomyrmex spp., Solenopsis spp. along with others s be kept in Type III material formicaria due to their ability to damage formicaria.***

***TINY AND SMALL ANTS READ HERE: When ordering the Nucleus III or any other formicarium on our website, please indicate the correct size AND/OR note the species name and size in the comments field during the checkout process.  We make many of our formicarium different to provide the best containment potential possible when we know ahead of time that this is what you want.  Why dont we make them all as secure as possible?  There are a few reasons.  The major issue is time and cost.  Small species formicaria require steps to insure there are no gaps in the nest.  These add time to the creation and cost in the way of materials to make them using a different process.  The next issue is ventilation.  For medium or larger species that are just fine in any of the Nucleus III or other habitats (they are too large to escape out of minute gaps), the ventilation is helpful as the colony approaches capacity in their formicarium.  It allows for a more varied humidity from top to bottom in the formicarium.  This is not as important with small or tiny ant species.  Lastly, the vast majority of ants kept as pets are medium to large in size.  This being the case, our standard method of making formicaria is based on the idea that we are making them for ants that are not small enough to slip through gaps not easily seen by the naked eye.  This helps us control costs in using less timely and costly methods as a standard.  We appreciate you taking the time to read this and if you have any questions please email tarheelants@gmail.com or call us at 919-348-3642.
